Why on-line romances do not transfer to the real world

10/12/2012 09:19

When you meet someone on-line, you are not meeting the actual person. Even if they are entirely honest about everything they say, you are still missing crucial information. Perhaps they are not revealing everything, and even if that is not the case, context is missing. You cannot see this person, smell their breath, hear the sound and tone of their voice or observe how they interact with others. As a result, you are missing a great deal of knowledge of this person.

So, if you try to transfer an on-line romance into the real world, there is a high probability of failure. There are two possible scenarios:

The person is physically located within a reasonable distance of you. In this case, you can arrange to meet for the first time in a quiet, public place and have a controlled conversation. If you both find the outcome of this pleasing, you can gradually add more depth to the relationship and have the same chance of success you would have with a casual acquaintance.

The person lives too far from you to make a commute on a regular basis. In this case, the actions of the previous scenario are harder to arrange and will naturally take longer to come to fruition. Even if the outcome is successful, you are now relegated to a long-distance relationship, which are generally doomed to failure from the outset. It is far easier to find a partner locally, even if you are not actively seeking such, random encounters will occur if that is what your heart desires.

These are just my views, of course, but they are echoed throughout the net:

A bear walks into a bar

10/01/2012 09:00

A bear walks into a bar and orders a bear.

The bartender brushes off the bear, saying, ‘We don’t serve beer to bears in this bar. Leave!'
The bear looks angry but leaves the bar with barely a backwards glance.
5 minutes go by and the bear comes back into the bar, wearing a bowler.
Again the bear orders a beer.
Once again, the bartender refuses, 'We don’t serve beer to bears in this bar. Beat it, buddy'
Now the bear looks furious, but leaves the bar bitterly.
15 minutes later, the bear returns to the bar, now wearing the bowler and a blazer.
Again the bear barks for a beer, again the bartender denies the bear the beseeched beverage.
Enraged, the bear attacks a nearby waitress, rends her limb-from-limb and proceeds to consume the body!

The bartender grabs a broom and berates the bear, ‘Get out! We do not serve beer to bears in this bar! And drugs are strictly forbidden!'
The bear looks bewildered, 'Drugs?’

‘I saw that bar bitch you ate!

How to leave a bad RP guild

09/14/2012 09:00

Below is a letter I sent to the leaders of a GW2 RP Guild; the names have been redacted because I don't have time for drama.

Subj: I am -so- out of here!

I am leaving the guild, in fact, I can't leave soon enough. I will give you a
list of grievances simply so you know why. I neither care whether you agree or
disagree nor whether you respond to this. In fact, it is highly improbable that
I would even check for a response.

1. 'Arrow In Mi Knee' - part of me is angry about this and another part is actually glad.
Thanks to the idiots in your guild, I have accidentally stumbled upon a 'good RPer' litmus
test. I LARP. I have LARPd with a person standing 3 feet from me with bad breath, perfume
that made my eyes water and a voice that grated on my nerves. I did not let these minor
details affect -my- performance. *That* is the mark of a good RPer. If you, or -anyone-
cannot remain in character because of 19 chars floating over my head, then *you* cannot
RP to begin with.

2. *Actual* RP ability - From what I have have seen, some of the members of the guild
are amateurs at best. You and **** -barely- qualify for that. There are definitely
better RPers than either of you in the guild. Neither of you have the *slighest* clue
on how to correctly RP a noble. The rest are even worse. ****, for example, could not
successfully RP placing an order at McDonald's. I could honestly RP circles around everyone
in this guild simultaneously, half-asleep with one hand tied behind my back.

3. Helpfulness -
a) I posted 2 RP requests. I barely got any response to the easiest of the two.
b) I asked **** for help with details about an RP session. I never even received
  an acknowledgement of the request.
c) I presented you with a possible path for my char and a possible rank. You neither
told me that my desires would not be granted nor helped me to find the correct rank.
Instead, you had me RP everything and then shot me down and attempted to throw me a
  sop.

4. You are not a 'dark' guild. At best, you are a 'light grey' guild. Drug trafficking,
slavery and random acts of torture/murder are not 'dark'. They are extremely plebeian.
I presented you with a 'dark' char and it was implied that I am mentally deranged.

Overall, I would say this is the absolute worst guild I have ever had the misfortune of
joining.

State Machine Based RP Char Design

09/10/2012 08:41

I all my years of RPing, I don't think I have ever told anyone how I create a char or ask anyone how they do it.

I have created what seems to me to be a very complicated method, but it allows my char to basically have a life of their own. I don't decide what happens to them or how they react, I simply type. They interact with their environment and change accordingly. My method is detailed below.

I want my characters to really feel like they're alive and have their own personalities. I've got a way of doing this, which seems complicated to me, but it works for me. Do other people have elaborate procedures, or do you just dive in?

    My RP Char creation process:

First, I create a name. This is a very important step. It has to be something I like and 90% of the time, it determines their gender. The remaining 10% of the time, I flip a coin.

Then, I decide on their profession. 90% of the time, the life they lead will set them on the path to the profession they will eventually choose. Sometimes, that is not the case; for example a rich kid who runs off to join the circus on a whim.

Next, I begin the character design phase. I sit down and compile a list of questions. Usually, I end up with 100-200 questions (I add additional questions that occur to me as I am answering the original questions). After I have the list, I start answering the questions. Some of the questions will be used to shape the char, some will be used for color and some may never be used at all, unless a specific event(s) occur(s).

Once I have the list of questions, I start what I call the Char Tree, which I design in Visio (a program for flowcharts and diagrams). I have a start point (birth) and an end point (the age at which I will begin to RP the char). Everything before and after the second point is blank. I being to create my tree, filling in -just- enough details to have a suitable framework and to cover the span between the two points enough to begin RPing the char.

I figuratively draw a tree and place my char's life on top of of it. Some branches fork many times, others may not fork at all. Some have a lot of leaves others barely have any.  The leaves, if you will, on the tree are event points, places in a char's life where they could make one choice or another. As many choices as I can think of exist at each leaf. I call this a Schrodinger Box. All of the possible choices for that event exist inside the box. Only one will come out. The only way to determine what event will come out is for that event to come up during RP. I extend the tree out past the end point far enough to establish a decent framework for behavior/morality.

When I have all the paths and choices mapped in Visio, I alter all of the cells for events that have not occurred so that the text color matches the cell color, making it invisible. This way, I can see what has happened to a char easily. As I RP a char, it will reach points where a decision has to made. I roll a dN (where N is the number of choices available) and whatever number comes up is the choice I make. I then make that cell visible to discover what will/has happened.

For example, my current char ran away from home. Why she ran away from home is currently unknown. The top probable choices are a)She had a father who suddenly wanted to be more -loving- than was appropriate, b) she was literally swept away by a traveling circus, or c) she left home to avenge the death of her sister/best friend. It is possible that why she ran away from home will -never- com up and it is just as possible that if it does and entirely different reason will be the cause.

Needless to say, this entire procedure is very time consuming and I usually spread it out over a week or two so that I can have a solid framework.

Another factor that influences the char development is interaction with other chars. This will cause events to occur that never occurred to me. I add the questions to the list, answer them, update the diagram and make another roll. Rinse, lather, repeat as necessary.

Humorous Feature Request

09/10/2012 08:40

This is a humorous feature request I submitted for Guild Wars 2:

Ok, this is a joke, I don't expect anyone will actually grant this request. But the thought did amuse me, and working in SQA I  can imagine how much hate you get via this form, so I thought I would submit something that  might may you chuckle.

I would like an option (in the options) that would control what the /age command displayed. Below is what I would like to see in place of a number that, at some point in time, will horrify me. You, may, of course, replace my wording with whatever you deem hilarious:

You don't want to know. You -really- don't want to know. Have you considered taking up a hobby? Or bathing? I hear there are attractive girls in the real world too...
